The best thing by far about Ma is Octavia Spencer, which, I guess, if you’re going to have one great thing, it should be the actress playing the title character. She’s funny and vulnerable and creepy, and also a believable lure for the unwitting teens.
But the movie is a little thin in terms of plot, and I’m not quite sure the genre.
It’s not scary enough to be horror; not funny enough to be comedy.
And a half hour in, there was little mystery about where the movie would end up.
Spencer is all in though, and great acting in mediocre movies is a novelty I’ve always enjoyed (Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad; Ewan McGregor in the Star Wars prequels).
64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes feels about right.
